Once you have an accepting attitude then you can enjoy a more stress-free life and actually feel good about yourself again no matter what your situation is.

So you want to experience the benefits of a positive attitude? Figuring out how to be positive is not the solution.
Accepting and taking responsibility is the first step towards having an amazing mindset. You need to accept the winters in your life if you want to enjoy the springs.
"He left me? It's my fault."
"I lost my job? It's my fault."
Taking responsibility is the first (although unpleasant) step. From there you can start taking charge and choose to be positive about your situation rather than masking your genuine disappointments with "positivity".
That being said, accept your feelings as well and be okay with being disappointed!NOTE: Also, don't berate yourself about this either! Sure it's your fault but not entirely! Not only that but we all make mistakes...and we all pay for them! But that's okay because you roll with the punches!
Roll With Life's Punches!
Yes a positive attitude is contagious but having it is not like having a shield against tough times. Instead, it's an understanding that no matter what happens you'll be able to handle it!
"I've hit that brick wall at work? No problem - I can handle it!"
"I've got cancer? No problem - I can handle it....Yes I will be scared, frightened, depressed and might even die...but whatever happens I'll handle as well as I can."
It's about letting go of all the per-conceived notions or expectations you've had of yourself until this point. It's about taking life for what it is and what it's giving you.
From there you can start making the most of it and knowing that you're doing the best you can even though you're not perfect!
This accepting attitude of your limitations and circumstances will help you with how to be positive in tough times!
Life Does Get Better!
If you accept and take responsibility of your situation, adapt to the changes you need to make and understand how life has its ups and downs, you will then enjoy the true benefits of a positive attitude!
In life we all face hardships and everyone at some time or another feels like there's no way out. This is especially true with new situations that we didn't expect or feel like we deserved!
When I find myself in this situation and am wondering about how to be positive I tell myself "This too shall pass." and let myself go through the hard times. I know that the good times are on their way and that helps me keep a positive attitude that is contagious!
Again genuinely feeling the benefits of a positive attitude isn't possible if you aren't going to accept both your situation and how you genuinely feel about it. If it's so horrible and you want to cry - do it!
Accept and take responsibility is the first step towards being able to adapt to it. Once you've adapted you will realize that one day it will get better and you will enjoy those benefits!
Until then, don't keep your head up. Instead, keep your heart true! (Yes I have a corny side! ;-) )
