Have you noticed how beating depression is toughest when you're depressed? You want to have a fail-safe "anti-depression" plan for yourself for when you're depressed!
You see, depression is a state of mind and not a circumstance. That means that it's your head playing tricks on you!
"How to overcome depression in the first place?" You ask? Let's get you first accepting and then beating depression so that you can enjoy life again by:
- Listening to inspiring music or watching movies or books
- Rreating yourself to something
- Going out
- Talking to friends
Step 1 on How to Overcome Depression: Find Inspirational Media!
What music or video puts a smile on your face? How about an old movie that inspired you when you were younger? Or how about a song with lyrics that moved you?
When it comes to noticing depression warning signs and what to do from there, a quick fix is something inspiring that will let yourself remember that your situation is not as bad as you think and that you can get yourself out of it.
You see, it's really about having faith that no matter what happens - you can take care of yourself.
You can also read a book or two again. For me, I enjoy reading "Retire Young, Retire Rich" by Robert Kiyosaki.
So when I notice those depression warning signs, even reading just a few pages puts things back into perspective. It just might do the same for you too!
Step 2 on How to Overcome Depression: Treat Yourself!
Okay. Big warning here. I'm not talking about treating yourself to some food. I'm talking about treating yourself to something you love doing and not love eating ;-) !
Do you love going out for walks? Do it! Do you enjoy exercising? Go for it! (By the way, exercise is the tool in your arsenal when it comes to beating depression.)
In my case, I love going for walks and reading so I would carry a book with me and just go to a nearby coffee shop.
I find the walk enjoyable and the anticipation from reading my book takes away my depression warning signs. My brain also appreciates it when I put more fun facts in it! ;-)
Step 3 on How to Overcome Depression: Get Out!
In addition to treating yourself, get out of your place! Get some sunshine (your body would appreciate it!)
If you would rather stay home and watch T.V., tell yourself that before you do, you must step outside your place for 10 seconds! After that you can put the T.V. on!
This one is my favorite ways for beating depression. I find myself just walking outside, or going to a coffee shop filled with people and I've got a smile on my face all over again! =)
Step 4 on How to Overcome Depression: Talk to Your Friend!
If you're noticing strong depression and anxiety symptoms, you might want to talk to some friends about it. Friends are people who are there for you and if they really are you friends, they will listen and support you.
What they will and must not do, is judge you. Be sure to share your feelings with someone you know will not judge you. The thing is that your true friends really love being a friend in need and would enjoy bringing you back up from your funk!
I'mblessed because when I catch myself suffering from depression and anxiety symptoms I can talk to my roommates who are also my friends. They just listen and that helps me with beating depression.
Still Depressed? The Ultimate Cure!
If you're doing all these things and you're still feeling depressed then you might want to do the ultimate anti-depressant: help someone else. That's right. Find someone down the street, a neighbor, or anyone and just give them a hand with something.
That sounds easier said than done because you don't even want to go out, right? Well, thank goodness for the internet!
Go to a support forum and find other people in your situation. You will more than likely be able to help someone and even find help for yourself there!
A forum that I've joined is Depression Forum.org and I've found some good information on there. Maybe you can too!
The funny thing is that depression warning signs come back as life goes on. Be sure to have all the things that have worked for you thus far for beating depression, written on an "Anti-depression" list with some words of support from yourself.
Put that list either on your computer or elsewhere so that you can go back to it if you ever feel the need for it again. It has the same role as an emotional First Aid Kit so take the time to make one for yourself!
That way, when you see depression warning signs again, you'll be able to notice your depression, deal with it and live with peace of mind again!
