Knowing How To Break Bad Habits Isn't The Same As Breaking Bad Habits!
Even if you knew how to break bad habits you still wouldn't do anything! You see, we find comfort in our habits and that comfort can be so strong that it keeps us on our path of self-destruction.
"Then how can I start changing bad habits?" I'm going to show you a simple 3-step plan on how to break bad habits that will get you feeling proud about who you see in the mirror again!
- Step 1 - Acknowledge the bad habit
- Step 2 - Analyze and replace it
- Step 3 - Take extreme measures
If you do this your bad habits will vanish in less than 90 days and you'll be living with peace of mind again!
Step 1 - Acknowledge The Bad Habit
The most important step is the one that advice-givers don't want you to take! Ask yourself if you really want to get rid of this habit at all! Maybe you like it and want to keep it.
I know that in my case I like drinking coffee. Sure, it's not the best habit (tea is a healthier alternative) but I enjoy this habit and I don't want to get rid of it!
How about you? Do you really want to know how to break bad habits? Or are you working on breaking bad habits because you should?
So acknowledge this habit and consider accepting and keeping it as long as no one else gets hurt! ;-)
Step 2 - Analyze And Replace it
Once you've done Step 1 and want to learn more about how to break bad habits then it's time for Step 2. Ask yourself this simple question: "What am I getting out of this?" and then write down the answers.
So for example in college I used to spend my Fridays alone and not go out. I asked myself "What am I getting out of this?" and found my answers to be: comfort and protection.
Replace It! I then looked into how to replace the bad habit with another that gave me the same feelings. I found that if I changed that habit into going out with friends who make me feel comfortable and protected then I ended up going out!
How about you? How could you work on changing bad habits into good ones?
Step 3 - Take Extreme Measures
Now I'm going to give you the nuclear weapon on how to break bad habits! Imagine yourself with this habit 5 years from now:
- What would you be doing?
- How would your life be like?
- Would you be happy?
In most cases (even as I find myself thinking about my bad habits now) you wouldn't be. Instead you'd be downright miserable!
Go online and find pictures of people who have kept that habit and who are miserable. For example, if you want to stop smoking then find pictures of people who have kept smoking and are suffering the consequences.
Yes, those consequences could happen to you! Put the pictures either on your laptop or print them out to put them around your house. Your habit will start to get the message.
Give Yourself 90 Days!
In general, breaking bad habits takes 90 days. So I recommend giving yourself that amount of time as you're working on how to break bad habits.
Ponder on it! Think about how you'll be living a much more beautiful life just 90 days from now! I know that I'm glad to have become more social.
I get to experience little adventures that I never would've otherwise! I'm sure that as you continue changing bad habits, you will too! ;-)
